When people are asked to think about the most dangerous jobs they might think about jobs like firefighters or those that involve heavy machinery. Although those professions do have risks, it turns out that more sales reps and truck drivers are killed while working. This is because sales reps that travel and truck drivers are on the road frequently, putting them at risk for motor vehicle accidents.
According to information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2011, 683 of these vehicle-bound workers lost their lives while working. Farming and ranching was next with 300 workers who died on-the-job in 2011.
Coming as no surprise to fans of the television show “The Deadliest Catch,” fishing is also one of the most dangerous jobs. Although there were fewer fishing fatalities (116) then in those professions previously mentioned, the job had the highest fatality rate per 100,000 workers.
Other statistics to note: Pennsylvania was one of the top five states with the most workplace deaths. Texas had the most with 456. Even though 56 percent of working hours are completed by men, males make up a disproportionate, 92 percent of fatalities.
