A man who worked for Giant Food Stores fell from a 12-foot ladder on Valentine’s Day. He was rushed to the York Hospital and given care, but he recently passed away from his injuries. He was 56 years old.
No one actually saw the man fall from the ladder, but he was discovered with serious blunt force trauma, already lying on the ground. Examining his injuries suggested that he had not been standing near the ladder and fallen, but that he had to have climbed at least part of the ladder.
The company did say that he was immediately transported to York Hospital, which suggests that he was found fairly quickly after the fall, though exact times are not available since it wasn’t witnessed.
During the week after his fall, the man’s condition did stabilize for a short time, but then things reversed course and he began to grow worse.
The store is working with the authorities at this time and is not giving much more information about the case, but they did say that the death was ruled an accidental death. Specifically, a blood clot formed in the man’s lung, and that clot was traced back to the trauma he suffered upon impact.
Along with the authorities, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has started an investigation, as is typical after workplace accidents. Like Giant, though, OSHA would not comment on the investigation at this time.
When a worker is killed in an accident in Pennsylvania, any surviving family members may have a right to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and much more.
