Motorcycle riders should be careful during the Fourth

by | Jul 3, 2014 | Motorcycle Accidents

This weekend, scores of people who ride motorcycles will be on the road travelling throughout Pennsylvania. The weather is ideal, and the celebrations for the height of the summer are bound to bring more people out than usual. As a matter of fact, AAA estimates that more than 40 million Americans across the country will be on the road. Because of this, the likelihood of accidents increases.

With that, motorcycle riders must be vigilant in order to avoid accidents. Indeed, drivers are supposed to “see” motorcyclists, but they don’t always do so. Combine that with possibility of aggressive drivers and distracted drivers, and this can be a challenging weekend for motorcycle riders.

However, there are several things that can be done so that motorcycle riders can be safe.

Stay out of blind spots – Indeed, motorcycles have considerable maneuverability, but bad things happen when a rider is in a driver’s blind spot. A driver may think it is okay to change lanes or make a turn without checking their blind spot, and a motorcyclist can be seriously injured or killed.

Don’t drink and ride – It may seem obvious, but refraining from alcohol before riding can keep a rider safe. Alcohol affects the part of the brain that controls judgment, so impaired riders are more likely to take chances that they may not take when sober. These chances can also lead to disastrous results.

Wear your helmet – Having protective headgear is likely the single most important thing riders can do to protect themselves from serious injury. By preventing brain injuries, a rider could survive a serious accident.
