In the past couple of years, various bus accidents that have taken the lives of passengers have shaken up not just the communities where they occurred, but the nation. Are tour buses really a safe way to travel? What about charter buses that so commonly carry students, young lives that deserve the utmost protection?
Most people who rely on public transportation don't think twice about their safety before hopping on board a bus, train or ferry. They tend to assume that the driver is a licensed, trained and experienced transit employee, and in many cases, that's true. But just as when we go behind the wheel ourselves, there's no absolute guarantee of safety. Inclement weather, another driver or unforeseen circumstances can always cause an accident. And sometimes, unfortunately, the public transit driver does turn out to be at fault.
If you have school-aged children who rely on bus transportation to get to and from their classes each day, you have a reasonable expectation that they'll be transported safely and on time. The job of a school bus driver isn't always easy, but those who take it on know that children, parents and school administrators are counting on them to be responsible. When they shirk that responsibility, there are usually negative consequences.
Field trips are one of the best things about being in school, particularly in late spring, when students are restless and eager to get out of the classroom for any reason at all. They're even more exciting when they involve a trip out of town for some sightseeing. And although the permission slip is still a necessity to ensure that parents know where their children are headed, most students, teachers and parents don't expect anything to go wrong on these trips. But sometimes, unfortunately, accidents do happen.
Some people who decided to take a bus home from St. Patrick's Day festivities were subjected to a traffic crash anyway when an SUV crashed into the bus around 4 a.m. Sunday. Five people were injured when the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Bus was hit.
Getting into a car accident is not a fun experience. Injuries can prevent car accident victims from being able to move in the wake of a crash. However, in some instances, individuals who are in an accident are able to come to the aid of others.
