"Profile of Timothy A. Shollenberger"

"There's no place where success comes before work, except the dictionary," wrote historian and author Donald Kimball. Trial lawyers may not be familiar with this quotation but most know firsthand that dedication to one's clients and craft, long hours, and hard work that are the foundation for professional achievement. Every day Timothy A. Shollenberger, PaTLA's President-Elect, demonstrates this ethic by his tireless advocacy, loyalty to PaTLA, and commitment to his community. On Sunday, July 16, at the 2000-01 Board of Governors Meeting, Tim will lead PaTLA as its next president, an accomplishment that is a credit to his years of hard work and service.

PaTLA leaders were asked recently to name Tim's most important qualities. Their profile identifies his energy, intellect, care for others, pragmatism, persuasiveness, and experience. Tim is an accomplished trial lawyer who will bring these and other attributes to the post of PaTLA President.

He is a founder and principal of the Harrisburg law firm of Shollenberger & Januzzi. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dickinson College (1978) and received his J.D. (1981) from the Dickinson School of Law. Tim is perhaps best known for his work in the field of automobile law, serving for many years on the faculty of PaTLA's renowned Annual Auto Law seminar. He is the founder of PaTLA's popular Nuts and Bolts of Auto Law course. A prolific writer in the field of auto law, his writings are too numerous to list. His most recent book and CD-ROM, co-authored with David Lutz, is "Pennsylvania Auto Litigation: Guidelines and Forms for the Trial Lawyer." He also co-authored PaTLA's well known "Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Insurance" book.

A champion of trial lawyers and their clients, Tim served in 1996 as the first President of the Central Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. In 1997, he was appointed by the Supreme Court as Chairperson of an Attorney Hearing Panel for the Disciplinary Board and served as a Hearing Committee Member from 1992 through 1996.

Active in his community, Tim long ago became affiliated with the American Heart Association. He currently serves as a Member or the Board of Directors of the South Central Pennsylvania Chapter, and he previously served as chair of the Board. For years, he has been instrumental in staging mock trial programs for elementary school students on the health risks of smoking. He has formed an alliance with PaTLA and the Heart Association and this year plans to go statewide with the educational program as part of his ambitious agenda as President. He has also volunteered his time or otherwise contributed to Big Brothers/Big Sisters and youth sports activities.

Tim served as PaTLA's Case Notes Editor for Auto Insurance from 1988 through 1992. He also co-authored the Amicus Curiae briefs in Rump v. Aetna and Winslow-Quattlebaum v. Maryland Casualty.

In 1998, Tim was the co-recipient of PaTLA's prestigious Milton D. Rosenberg Award for outstanding service to the organization. His commitment to PaTLA's goals cannot be challenged, and his credentials to serve as President are well established.

By his hard work and dedication, Tim has earned the respect and admiration of his fellow trial lawyers. Friends and colleagues recently congratulated Tim and expressed their confidence that he is ready for the challenge.

Outgoing President Frank J. Wesner Jr. said that Tim brings an infusion of energy, intelligence, and common sense to the post of president. "PaTLA is indeed fortunate to have such a vibrant, bright, and practical individual to lead PaTLA," said Wesner. "I am certain that Tim will continue the fine tradition of PaTLA leaders," he added.

David L. Lutz, Tim's friend and colleague (and PaTLA's next Vice-President), said that Tim is well prepared and will meet the challenge of serving as PaTLA President head on and decisively. "Knowing Tim as I do, there is only one way he will approach this job: being totally focused and prepared for any crisis and giving it 110 percent," said Lutz.

James F. Mundy, past PaTLA President, who serves on the faculty of PaTLA's Annual Auto Update with Tim, said that he is qualified because he is energetic, intelligent, and caring. "In short, Tim possess all of the qualities necessary to make an excellent leader for PaTLA," Mundy said.

Karl J. Januzzi, his partner and colleague, cited Tim's longtime service to PaTLA and his commitment to the Heart Association. "Tim is a staunch fighter for his clients' rights and an involved member of his community," Januzzi said. Januzzi also said that Tim's can-do attitude and experience are the reasons why he always accomplishes what he sets out to do.

Please join us in wishing Tim all of the best in the coming year.
