In Pennsylvania, Memorial Day weekend is the beginning of the summer driving season. With lower gas prices, you can bet that people will be on the road (especially on Friday) to get to their favorite summer destination.

With more people on the road, you can expect traffic delays. You can also expect the potential for car accidents to increase as well. However, with all the dangers that come with Memorial Day weekend driving, there are steps you can take to help avoid being in an accident

Watch out for distracted drivers –You have probably heard several distracted slogans, including “arrive alive, don’t text and drive” and “friends don’t allow friends to text and drive.” So being aware of distracted drivers, and staying away from them, should be your mission this weekend.

Don’t get agitated – With all the cars on the road, traffic may be heavy in spots; which means that short tempers may lead drivers to take chances they may not normally take. If you are cut off in traffic, it’s not the end of the world. Keep it cool, and stay out of trouble.

Avoid fatigued driving– Many people will try to make the most of the weekend. This may include long hours behind the wheel in addition to parties and barbeques. It’s good to have fun, but you have to be awake for it. Instead of relying on energy drinks, maybe taking some time to rest may be best.

All of these tips are examples of using reasonable care while behind the wheel.
