What to do after a car accident

Being in an accident can be a jarring event. There is nothing really that can prepare you for such an event, but there are several things that can be done to protect your legal rights after an accident. Depending on the severity of the crash, the helpful tips set forth in this post can set the foundation for what an attorney will need to advance your claim or defend you as needed.

Be careful what you say – Indeed, you may be frustrated or scared, or you may even feel guilty about what just transpired; but being careful about what you say is important in preserving your rights. You don’t want your sincere words to be construed as an admission of guilt or fault.

Exchange insurance information – This may seem obvious, but there may be situations where it may be difficult to obtain it. Some drivers may not carry proof of insurance (even though the law requires it), or the other party may be severely injured and unconscious. In these situations, obtaining other identifying information (such as a telephone number and address) may be helpful.

Use your phone – Today’s smartphones have very good cameras (and video cameras) that can take accurate footage of the scene and the damage to the vehicles. Additionally, some insurers have applications that enable you to send in claims, with photographs, from the scene of the accident.

If you have additional questions about what should be done after a car accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can help.

The preceding is not legal advice and does not create an attorney/client relationship.
